Radiation therapy plays an essential role in the successful treatment of many malignancies and is one of the cornerstones of a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to cancer care. It is often used in conjunction with surgery and/or chemotherapy. However, radiation therapy may sometimes serve as a more effective, less invasive primary treatment option, which in some cases can replace surgery.
Radiation therapy uses high-energy particles or waves, such as x-rays, gamma rays, electrons, or protons to destroy or damage cancer cells. It is often part of the main treatment for some types of cancer, such as cancers of the head and neck, bladder, lung, and Hodgkin’s disease. Many other cancers are also treated with radiation therapy. Thousands of people become free of cancer after receiving radiation treatments, either alone or combined with other treatments such as surgery or chemotherapy.
With recent advances in cancer treatment, radiation oncologists are now able to map a cancerous site and deliver precise beams of radiation directly to the diseased tissue. However, differences do exist in the quality of radiation equipment. Centrelake Imaging & Oncology features state-of-the-art equipment, including a Varian 600C linear accelerator, CT Simulator, and 3D Treatment Planning software.
Our specially trained, board-certified radiation oncologists are skilled in both standard and unique radiation therapies. We are constantly seeking innovative ways to use existing technology and identifying new therapies to help our patients. Centrelake Imaging & Oncology provides a comprehensive program, utilizing the skills and technical expertise of radiation oncologists, medical physicists, radiation therapists, and dosimetrists. Compassionate care and the latest technology from the radiation oncology team offer our patients the means to successfully fight the battle against cancer.
Our Advanced IMRT Technology
We are well-equipped to treat practically any malignancy with a ground-breaking Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT). IMRT is a revolutionary new treatment technique where high dose volumes of radiation are sculpted to the unique shape of each patient’s tumor. Based on the tumor size, shape, and location, a powerful advanced computer program plans a precise dose of radiation in three dimensions. IMRT directs radiation at the tumor and varies the intensity of pencil thin beams of radiation focusing on the tumor from multiple directions with high precision. IMRT adds greater accuracy, higher cancer control rate, and lower rate of side effects. Prostate, brain, and head and neck treatments will notably benefit from this modality.
